The Hunt for Houdini
The Hunt for Houdini is Over
When you follow a deer for 7 years and hunt him hard for 5 of those 7 years it becomes a part of you. I know for some that is hard to understand, but for a Whitetail Deer addict it is very easy to understand. It started in 2019 when we first noticed him. I knew right away we had to put him on the protected list. We could see that the young buck had great potential to become a Saskatchewan giant. As you can see in the attached, pictures it did not take long for him to bloom!

The Hunt for him started in 2021. This is the year that he acquired his name “Houdini”. We had him at two of our bait sites that were approximately 8 miles apart.

In 2022 we had early trail cam pictures of him. But he lived up to his name, and he alluded us.

2023 We had zero Trail Cam pictures of him. We figured he was dead and gone. But came to find out after the season, he was hanging out a few miles to the north of our area.

2024 we hunted him every day of the season , one of our clients had an opportunity at him, but Houdini played another one of his magic tricks and was able to escape the shot that was fired at him.

2025 came along I knew it was time to do something different, so we could close the books on this magnificent Whitetail. I adjusted the set up where he had been frequently over the past years. A long time client/friend Craig Weaver drew the stand where Houdini had called home.

On week # 3, day # 1, I received a phone call From Craig saying “I got him!” I have to say when I pulled in to retrieve Craig and Houdini, it was very emotional for both Craig and myself. What an absolute pleasure to share that moment with an old friend. Once again, it proves to me why I love doing what we do so much.
