Hunting for a Lifetime. Black Bear Family Outing Featuring Jack Jumper

Tell me a little about your hunting experience. How long have you been hunting black bear?

Well, I’ve been hunting big game since 1980. I guess I’ve been coming uh what I call north to hunt since 1980. I enjoy hunting Mule Deer, Antelope, Whitetail, Elk and Bear and I came to Canada probably 20 years ago and went bear hunting and had a real good time and I was looking forward to coming back and I wanted to come with my son-in-law, Bruce Kimbell, who was with us and we came up together to kind of enjoy being together and doing things together and uh and so we’re having a a family outing.

How did your hunting tradition get started.

My grandfather started teaching me to squirrel hunt when I was preschooler and I have enjoyed hunting and being in the woods and playing and doing things in the outdoors all my life. I don’t remember not out doing things in the woods and so hunting has just been a natural part of my life. It’s been a very important part as far as enjoyment’s concerned.

Do you hunt Black Bears back home?

No there’s not many black bears in Texas anymore. There at one time there was a lot of black bears in East Texas where I live. They’ve been all killed out for over a hundred years so there’s no black bear hunting in in uh in Texas right now I don’t believe.

Why did you choose to come hunt with Chaparral Hunting Adventures?

One of my friends invited me to come with him and he described the hunt. I had come hunting some 20 years ago, black bear in this area, and I was thought it’d be fun to do it again and bring Bruce with me so that’s what I did.

Thinking back to day one, what were your thoughts headed out to the tree stand?

I was looking forward to seeing the country and to getting out to see how the operation worked here. I was met by friendly guys and that you know talked about what we do and so we went out and and I was looking forward to it. It worked out to be very nice.

How was the bear that you shot?

Camera had shown that there was a a pretty large bear at this site and I was looking forward to it and I had hunted there for about 12 hours and so I was pretty familiar with it and was looking forward.

How did it feel when you got your hands on your bear?

He was a medium-sized bear so he was a good mature bear. Well it was probably an hour wait before he got there because they told me not to leave the stand until after the guide had gotten there and when Nick got there he wanted to go down and check it out before because the bear had left my vision when I shot it and so I wasn’t sure it was down completely. So anyway, it was, I was pretty excited. My heart rate was elevated pretty good. during the wait. I second guessed myself on my shot and I second guessed myself on choosing that particular bear and, all the things that go through your mind that you could have maybe done better or different or whatever. But it was pretty exciting to sit there and wait for the chance to go down and find him.

How are the accommodations here at Chaparral?

I’d say to start off with the lodge and the food and everything is excellent. I cannot say how much I’ve enjoyed the visiting with the friends and eating the the excellent food and accommodations. Accommodations are very nice uh particularly impressed that everything is as clean and nice as it is in the bunk room. The beds are comfortable slept well. Done real good. We’ve sat around in the easy chairs and told each other lies about as much as you could enjoy in the last few days.

Have the guides been helpful?

Guides have been very knowledgeable very careful to make sure they explain and make sure we were safe and knew what to do and so they they’ve been very very helpful.

Would you come back next year?

I’d come back next year without any question.
