SASKATCHEWAN'S BEST BLACK BEAR HUNTS

THE BEAR OF A LIFETIME

Spring Saskatchewan black bear hunts take place during the month of May and are 5 full days. We have a very good population of black bears on our hunting lease that have not been hunted since 2012. Along with our common black bears, we have a mix of brown and blonde colour phase bears. We do not put a lot of pressure on our bears, so you will see several bears every night. Your trophy black bear hunting experience is enhanced by our use of trail cameras.

WHAT MAKES FOR TOP QUALITY
BLACK BEAR TERRITORY

It’s all about genetics and environment, plus thousands of years of evolution. The Saskatchewan environment is a harsh environment, late springs, early falls, long winters. Any big game that calls the forest region of Saskatchewan home has spent thousands of years adapting and evolving to improve their chance of survival. That often means instincts are developed to help black bears find ample food sources and bodies evolving to carry extra body mass into the long winter hibernation period. Great Saskatchewan black bear genetics also play a role in the high proportion of color phase black bears. Estimates range from 15% to 25% of all black bears in the area are brown, blonde or cinnamon color phase bears.

HIGH BEAR POPULATION

Bear numbers are extremely high in this part of Saskatchewan, Canada, partially due to the 2020 and 2021 spring bear seasons being closed to American hunters. Many hunters see and witness high numbers of bears at the bait sites.

HEAR FROM OUR HUNTERS

What is the best time to hunt black bear in Saskatchewan?

In the spring from the beginning of May till the first week in June. In the fall we have a small window. Last week in August and the first week of September.

This all depends on a lot of factors : Typically you will see numerous bears. We run approximately 40 bait sites. And only hunt where we have good activity.

On average 275 lbs.

Our bear hunts are 5 days.

This all depends on who you are talking to. With my experience a 500 lb spring bear is near the top.

Anything over the 300 lb mark is a great bear.

Awards – 20″ All-Time -21″.

18″.

The best way to size up a mature bear is the 55 gallon drum at the bait site. If the bear can fit into the barrel it is 250 lbs or less.

Yes, our outfitting area has approximately 30-35 % color-phase bears.

The chance is there. We have about a 30-35 % ratio of color-phase in our area.

Bear hunting is a relaxing hunt. A morning coffee enjoying the spring or fall air or maybe some fishing is in the schedule, after a home cooked breakfast. We have our big meal of the day around 1:30 pm. The hunt starts late afternoon into the evening when the best activity is present. Days are long so once the hunt is over for the day (9:30-10:30 pm) we will have some home cooked soup and sandwich before sending you off to the bunkhouse for a “short night”.

We hunt mostly out of tree-stands but we will also hunt out of ground blinds on occasion.

We accommodate bow hunters and have had some great success.

Yes crossbows are legal in Saskatchewan.

All muzzleloaders are legal in Saskatchewan. Yes you can have a scope on your muzzleloader.

On average 30 yards, but in some cases we will move back to 60-70 yards with a rifle hunter to get the job done.

In my personal opinion not at all. You need to respect the black bear. As long as you follow your outfitters guidance there is very little danger.

The younger bears will often be curious and come to check out what is in the tree or blind. The bigger mature bears will only come into the bait if the situation is just right!

Your saskatchewan bear license that is included with your hunt is your permit needed to bring your bear home. Or you can leave it with our recommended taxidermist to mount and ship at your expense.

Yes skinning/capping is part of the all inclusive hunt.

This is your choice if you want to take your meat home. We do not include butchering, but there is a local butcher that will cut and wrap your meat at your expense.
