Chaparral Hunting Adventures

I was born in Akron, Ohio but raised in Midland, Michigan where I met my girlfriend's father when I was 16 and he got me into bow hunting. Then I met the Briggs family, married one of the daughters and hunted with them in Texas. Worked in the oil field industry for 30 years and started hunting all over the world, elk and mule deer, in Alaska, Africa, Europe. I just have the passion

Don't get that in texas

We have wonderful deer in Texas. I've killed a couple 180 class deer, my son has killed some real nice deer in Texas too. Smaller deer, 200 pounds, but 180 inches of horn. I've killed hundreds of deer in Texas but chances for a big body deer, 3-350 pounds, you don't get that down in Texas.

I've been hunting at Chaparral five or 6 years, whitetail for sure for five or six years and this is my fourth year for bear. I just enjoy the crap out of it. These guys are well organized. They’ll absolutely positively go out of their way to to make sure that you have a quality hunt.

a quality hunt

You go bear hunting and you’ve still got six or seven hours to languish. You can break up the monotony by going fishing. We did it last year for the first time and we’ll do it every year that Greg allows us to come up here. Highly recommend. Last year my nephew caught a 38 incher and I caught a 40 inch plus Pike. Fishing’s been pretty good.

good fishing

The food and the accommodations are wonderful. You're in a remote area to hunt these deer and bear but the accommodations are second to none.

second to none

One day it was colder than a well digger's ass, I've never been so cold in my life. I've hunted all over and I had the best equipment but I was not prepared for that cold. Greg told me about this Gumby suit and the second or third day I put on this sort of sleeping bag, the Gumby suit and the cold was no problem. Another impression is climbing up in those stands, 20-25 feet in the air. We don't have that kind of deal anywhere I've ever gone, it was different but it was for a reason. I've had bear, deer, even moose walk right under the stand and they don't smell you.

Lasting impressions
