January 28, 2015 – Trail cam pics of the ones that got away
It’s been another mild week with temperatures well above freezing through out the day and still mild temperatures into the near future. This week I sat down and went through a bunch of trail camera pictures that were taken after the season had ended. Last fall Chaparral baited approximately 50 sites and I have picked out several more stand locations to our far eastern border. One comment I heard over and over from our hunters during their week hunt was how many bucks were so close to being a shooter. Maybe it had broken tines or just was a 130 class deer, but many hunters felt that a year or two would really turn the bucks into shooters. A deer can put 10 – 15 percent on his overall antler growth given the right conditions. We have great genetics and food sources and this winter has been exceptional. We cannot forget about the larger bucks caught on film that eluded our hunters, or the 25 stands I chose not to hunt last fall in order to let the up and comers get another year older and bigger!! I feel Chaparral’s herd management is on the right path and next year will produce some great bucks. I will leave some trail cam pics of post season bucks ad bucks that simply got away this fall. If your looking for a hunting experience of a lifetime give me a call at 780-872-0137.
